So… my husband and I have been married for about 2 1/2 years. I never really noticed his drinking habits until we moved out of our college town we married in. I thought he was just a social drinker, but now that we are in a different state… he drinks alot. He is very successful and works hard… but the days after he drinks, he isn’t so much. He drinks atleast once/week. I know this doesn’t sound bad… he doesn’t hit me, or is violent, he just has a problem. His dad and brothers are alcoholics, and he has admited he has a problem. He started to go to AA when I threatened to leave him (we are expecting our first baby), but after 3 weeks of sobriety, he had a drink.
We make deals for him to not drink for x amount of time, and then he manipulates me into sooner, and before I know it, he is drinking at free will again!
He knows it bothers me, and he still does it. I don’t want to bring a child into his world of alcohol, or condone it to older kids… HELP!? I need support.
Thank you for all the nice words and advice. I didn’t know about AI-anon. I just found meetings in my area.
I just needed someone(s) to discuss this with. I don’t want my friends or family to know about my personal life…yet.

I’m taking a college class and we had to write a paper to describe a program [make up one] trying to get people to come to this center. Can you please read it and help me make it better!! Thank you!

At Discovery Island Preschool we are committed to establishing a supporting and safe community. We have a wonderful learning environment that is academically challenging and uniquely engaging. I believe that children should be allowed to grow at their own pace and to learn in ways that help them become confident in themselves as learners. Even from an early age children show preferences for different styles of learning. Some will find it easy to follow verbal instructions, others will learn from someone showing them “how to do it”, and some will learn both ways. At Discovery Island we address those differences, encouraging the development of the whole child, with activities that involve young students in ways appropriate to their learning levels and styles. We believe that the relationship between school and home play are important part in creating a successful learning experience for the child. Discovery Island curriculum and educational program offer and encourage good habits of health, nutrition, grooming, and safety. With meal time we use this for social interactions and teach them manors and family style values for dinner. In the class room we have seven learning centers: Construction and design center, Dramatic play center, writing center, Creativity and art center, Reading and listening center, Math and manipulative center, and Science and sensorial center.
What we like to do is make each child a portfolio so we can monitor his/hers progress. Several items that your child worked on are labeled, dated and stored in his/her portfolio so that later we can share this with you during parent-teacher conferences. Communication with parents is a big part because we want the parents to know how their child is doing. We e-mail, call, send papers home, conferences, and/or any other way that is best to communicating with the parent(s).
Hours of operation are: Monday thru Friday 6:45 a.m. to 5:30 pm OR specific contacted hours. The prices for this center is full-time rates are as follows: $110.00 a week. *Full-time is considered anything between 21 to 50 hours per week. Anytime over 50 hours is extra. I also accept drop-ins. The rate for daytime drop-in care is: $5.00 an hour per child. (Minimum 2 hours) or $30 a day for a full days care. The ratio of the children in one class is around 15-20 kids. This way there is an equal amount of attention and getting to know the child one on one so that we can really get to know them and there needs to learn.
All children enrolled into Discovery Island are treated with love and respect and provided with the opportunity to engage in a wide variety of activities. My most fundamental objective is to provide for your child a safe, clean, and loving atmosphere, in which each child will feel he/she is loved, valued, and wanted.

Thank you so much!! :]

Please any advice would be greatly appreciated i don’t know what im looking for in an answer maybe im just using this to procrastinate even more but i recognize my problem and i want to get better please help me!

I’ve been overweight most of my life not because I have poor eating habits (they could be better, but who’s couldn’t) but because I lead pretty much a sedentary lifestyle. I was never much into sports in school because I’m not very athletic, and I was always heavy so I felt like everyone was judging me.

But, the fact that I’m getting married next summer and other factors have taken me to my breaking point. I NEED to loose some weight and get healthier not just for looks, but for my well-being, and because I don’t want to end up like all of my overweight/obese family members.

I have no idea where to begin. I really suck at the whole self-motivation thing so I’m trying to get myself a “workout buddy.” We have an elliptical machine at home which I actually kind of like doing, but I’m just not sure how I should be doing it and how long. It’s got a million settings on it and I’m just not sure what to use. Any suggestions for a good and successful workout program that I can do at home that will incorporate the elliptical?

Can someone please edit my debate speech. The topic is “Laptops in elementary school”

I hope that you enjoyed my opponent’s speech as much as I did, yet I must disagree with what he has said. Children of this age, seem to be excessively distracted, and would not be able to focus as much as they possibly could; and allowing laptops in elementary schools would be adding fuel to the fire, in absence of strong monitoring. Also these children cannot be considered capable of handling their own assets at this early age. The chances of laptops getting stolen or damaged are too high, risky, and costly for parents. The necessity of a laptop in an elementary school is truly questionable. Laptop use can have bad effects on health (e.g. harmful to one’s eyes) as well as on academic skills (e.g. bad writing habits). Laptop brands would get an easy entry in the schooling sector for promoting their brands, and these children (and apparently their parents) would be targeted as marketing guinea-pigs. This would impose financial stress on parents, in order to satisfy the jealousy amongst children. The use of laptops can be disruptive, unhealthy, and can promote bad influences on young children. Finally, proper monitoring and website blocking is not always successful and it can prove a serious threat to the school policies.

One of the biggest reason for not making the appropriate academic progress is because I didn’t have the strategy and planning in order to become a successful students. I didn’t maintain my time. I was more of procrastinating and didn’t sets study habits. I didn’t use every resource possible to achieve the highest grade that I can possibly get. I wasn’t trying my best and was willing to accept any grade as long as it’s a passing grade. I was also stressing myself by taking so many units at the same time. Basically I was rushing myself to take as many classes as I can to earn 60 units and transfer so that I can pursuit my dream.

My mom hears of stories about other high school kids that spend so much time studying and “being involved and successful”. Now she gets angry anytime she sees me snoozing or NOT doing homework. My high school is competitive and has quite a few of those “all-state violinists/club president/sga board member/nhs official/varsity sport player/4.0 unweighted/all AP classes/interning at the university” students. Everyday, I’m told that I could be just like them if I would “hit the books” and if I don’t “STUDY NO SLEEP” then I’ll fail college and life. (”IF I can get into college with these lousy study habits and “un-Asian-ness”.) Every time she does this my confidence takes a beating. I know my study habits aren’t as intense in contrast to these amazing students, but I’ve worked hard to get where I am. I have top colleges recruiting me for academics and sports, but I’m starting to wonder if I should even think about going to those schools if I’ll fail there anyways.

KM & WA S asked:

I have a 2002 Prius. The 12 volt Battery is dead. The dealer indicated that a replacement battery is $135.00 plus a $50.00 for a bracket kit. The parts person indicate that Toyota has a bulletin about the original OEM battery discharging on owners with short trip driving habits. The new battery is bigger and offer more storage capacity. As expected, non of the auto parts stores offer a replacement battery. I looked up replacements on the web and came across this site: http://www.elearnaid.com/12vobaforpr2.html which claims 200 successful replacements with a Mazda Miata Battery and home made upgrade kit.

Can anyone shed some light on this claim? Have you used such substitute? Are there any concerns or negative impacts on the vehicle electrical system? Are there any other feasible alternative?
Thanks,
KM
Both the Prius and the Mazda Miata Batteries require an outside ventilation.
Some interesting informaton I found on the Mazda Miata: http://www.miata.net/garage/battery.html
